- Transboundary pollution - Describe one major pollution event affecting more than one country and examine the consequences of and responses to this event.
Acid rain is an example of a major transboundary pollution event where sulpher dioxide mixes with water and then later on falls as acid rain. This chemical comes mainly from coal powered power plants. This acid rain can have many consequences for people, buildings, wildlife, agriculture etc.
Europe is an example where acid rain is a major problem as it not only affects one country but also all other surrounding countries. The image below shows a map of global acid rain:
It shows a very large concentration of transboundary pollution in Europe where a very large number of countries are affected. From the 1980s, the UK was a major producer of pollution that caused acid rain. Winds have then blown the acid rain and it has come to affect the surrounding European countries.
I believe acid rain is a very disasterous as a reactant to major polluting events. I believe it's most harm is towards the marine life in water. As acid rain drips all the species in water are proven to reproduce successfully as they end up dying due to the posonous minerals. As these poisonous fish grow, those that depend on eating fish suffers too such as birds. In which sector of the environment do you think acid rain affects the most?
ReplyDeleteI like the topic! it shows that Europe would have the worst level of acid rain. This can most likely be contributed by china's bad and getting worse pollution situation. Since winds travel from east to west, the air pollution emitted by China's industries are moved to the westward direction. In the process, the toxic air is changed by condensation.
